Are Saturday jobs dying out?
The number of working teenagers has almost halved in the last 20 years, a study suggests, sparking fears of the "death of the Saturday job".
A Resolution Foundation report suggests a quarter of 16 and 17-year-olds were in work between 2017 and 2019 - falling from 48% in 1997-99.
Young people were instead prioritising studies over part-time work, it added.
Did you have a Saturday job as a kid?
I had three jobs. I worked in a music shop on Saturdays and after school, I did a paper round and I helped out on an ice cream delivery van.
Working as a teenager builds confidence and independence, it helps with your communication skills, makes you accountable. You will need all of these skills when you enter full-time employment.
A solution?
Pensioners receive free bus travel permits. How about offering free bus permits to kids aged 14 to 17 to help them get to their Saturday jobs?
An incentive
Not spending your hard-earned cash on travel would surely provide more incentive to get out there and work?
Conclusion
Working is a great habit, learn it at a young age and it will serve you well for the rest of your life!
